There are several resources and tips to help you when experiencing or helping someone with crisis and non-crisis mental health situations. During a non crisis situation using the steps from Mental Health First Aid can be extremely helpful. These steps are listed on the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan below.
Here are tips to help you navigate a crisis situation while seeking the appropriate professional help:

- Always call 911 during an immediate crisis, describing the situation in detail to the dispatcher.
- Make sure to keep yourself safe.
- Take all signs and warning signs of suicide seriously.
- If you notice warning signs of suicide be sure to ask the question “Are you thinking about suicide?” or “Are you thinking about killing yourself?”
- If you cannot ask the question, be sure to find someone who can.

- If the person answers “no” continue with the steps of the Action Plan above, and do your best to connect them with the appropriate professional help.
- If the person answers “yes” to the question, ask about planning:
- Have you thought about how you would kill yourself?
- Have you decided when you would do it?
- Have you done anything to get the things you need to kill yourself?
- If the individual answers “yes” to any of these questions, do the following as stated in Mental Health First Aid:
- Call 911 IMMEDIATELY. Tell the dispatcher the person is at risk for suicide. If available, ask for a mental health crisis professional.
- If possible, do not leave the individual by themselves. Wait with them until help arrives, or do your best to find someone who can.
